The books in this section have been chosen to help children who have begun to read but who need to extend their skills. We have also included books with pictures and content which will appeal to older children who are only just building their confidence in reading. Like books in the yellow section, they have large attractive illustrations with only a few words per page. They use "high frequency" words (words from the 100 most used words in print) for children to learn by sight; as well as words composed of letters which can be easily sounded out, so that the child should be able to hear the word from the sounds of the letters. They also introduce short words which use "digraphs", i.e. combinations of letters which represent a single sound. Children should read these books with an adult to tell them words they can't read immediately.
